Soldier allegedly kills girlfriend after sex, cuts off finger

A soldier from Maiduguri allegedly shot dead his girlfriend, Jennifer Ugadu, over infidelity.

The deceased was a 200-level student of the Faculty of Education, Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State.

It was learnt that the soldier, James Matol, accused Jennifer of cheating and using charms on him; he thereafter raped her before shooting and stabbing her multiple times to death.

Having allegedly killed her, he placed her dead body on the bed and locked her inside before running away with her phone. He also allegedly severed her thumb to use it in unlocking her phone.

Security personnel attached to the institution, the corpse of the undergraduate, aged 21, was discovered on Tuesday with bullet wounds and her right-hand finger cut off.

It was gathered that there were signs of struggling as her room was reportedly scattered and filled with bloodstains.

Matol had allegedly posted some grievous comments on the WhatsApp page of the 200-level student, claiming to have murdered her due to cheating and emotional frustration.

The suspected soldier also claimed that he had informed Jennifer’s mother and his own aunt of his action and that two of her friends identified as Vera and Eniye, were not giving the deceased good advice.

He was also said to have accused the girl of wasting five years of his life on the relationship and threatened to commit suicide in hiding.

A student of the Faculty of Education, who spoke in confidence, said: “We were shocked to hear what he was posting, and we quickly informed the institution’s authorities.

“He accused the girl of cheating on him and using of diabolic means to charm him. But most students know the couple and their violent relationship.”

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mike Okoli, has ordered a discreet Investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the lady.

A statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, said: “Police have recovered the decomposing corpse of one Jennifer Ugadu ‘f’ 23 years, a two hundred level student of the faculty of Education at the Niger Delta University Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area Bayelsa State.

“The deceased body was discovered on 13th of July 2021, after one of her friends stumbled on a chat, where the deceased boyfriend admitted to killing her and threatened to commit suicide.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was shot in her apartment by her boyfriend, one James Matol, who is allegedly a member of the Nigerian Army.

“Investigations also reveal that the deceased was last seen with the boyfriend on 11th of July 2021.”
