The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued two victims of jungle justice from being lynched to death.

In recent times, corpses of alleged criminals tortured and burnt to death and deposited along some major road junctions in Uyo, the state capital, have become a recurrent but gory sight.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, said on Tuesday in a press release in Uyo that the victims, one Ubong Sunny Ossom who stole two bottles of Campari at a Supermarket in Uruan Local Government Area, and one Christian Effiong who stole a generator in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA were rescued from being burnt to death.

“Before 12 noon of today, July 18th, 2023, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command had rescued two victims of jungle justice.

“One Ubong Sunny Ossom ‘m’ of Ikot Edebe village in Nsit Atai LGA who stole 2 bottles of Campari at Godslight Supermarket, Ekpene Ukim, in Uruan LGA and one Christian Effiong ‘m’ of Nung Atai Okobo village in Okobo LGA who stole a generator at mount zion church Ikot Ambon in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA were both rescued at the verge of being burnt after they were caught for stealing. This trend is becoming too frequent and alarming,” he stated.

The PPRO warned perpetrators of jungle justice to desist from the act and threatened that the Command would arrest and prosecute offenders.

The police, however, condemned the act of stealing, saying it is a crime but stated that jungle justice is not in line with the nation’s legal system.
