Police arrest ex-convict parading himself as warrant officer

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old ex-convict suspect, one Edidiong Anthony Matthew, who has been parading himself as military personnel in the rank of a warrant officer.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, said on Thursday in Uyo that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday at about 2 pm in half-dressed military camouflage.

John said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect who is an indigene of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area has been involved in a series of crimes in the state using the military uniform.

She stated that one walkie-talkie, phones suspected to have been stolen from his victims, a brown coverall dress, and RCC ID Card were recovered from the suspect.

“On 05/06/2024 at about 14:00hrs, Police operatives of the command on crime prevention patrol arrested one Eddiong Anthony Matthew, a 35-year-old indigene of Ikot Ekong Village in Mkpat Enin LGA in half-dress military camouflage.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is an ex-convict who had been perpetrating a series of crimes in the state in military uniform with a warrant officer rank.

“One walkie-talkie, phones suspected to have been stolen from his victims, a brown coverall dress, RCC ID Card were recovered,” the PRO stated.

John explained that the Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara has reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment and dedication to crime prevention in the state, adding that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of the investigation.
