Onorigho, Foundation donate notebooks to primary, secondary schools in Oghara

Mr Lucas Onorigho, the Bursar of Delta State Polytechnic Otefe -Oghara has attributed the decline in reading culture among school children to poor funding of the libraries.

Onorigho remarked on Wednesday during the donation of notebooks to some primary and secondary schools in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

The notebooks worth thousands of Naira were donated to the schools in collaboration with the Fatherland Humanitarian Foundation (FAHUF).

The beneficiaries were: the  Ogharefe Secondary School, Edjemouyavwe; Okuimemu Primary School, Otumàra and Ukavbe Secondary School,  Otefe.

Presenting the items, Onorigho said that the donation was his way of contributing to the resuscitation of the failing standard of education in the country.

“The donation is borne out of my desire to help revive the reading culture of the Nigerian child which has drastically dropped over the years.

“A way to eradicate illiteracy as well as restore reading habits in pupils and students in Oghara Kingdom.

“Research has also shown that the loss of interest in reading culture amongst our students today is a result of the non-availability of good and qualitative reading materials and articles for our children,” he said.

Onorigho urged people to discard the prevailing notion of “School na Scam” and take their studies seriously.

He commended the initiator and Founder of (FAHUF), Mrs Freda Akpabio for the gesture, noting that she was the facilitator of the donation.

Akpabio, represented by Mrs Rosemary Udosen said that the Nigeria children lacked a quality educational foundation that would enable them to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the country.

“Reading as part of learning in Nigerian schools is a dead culture that must be revived,” Akpabio said.

Responding, Mr Abovwe Isaac, Principal, Ukavbe Secondary School, Otefe, Oghara expressed his appreciation to Mr Onorigho and the Foundation for the donation.

Isaac said that the donation would no doubt help to redirect the children from the vices induced by social media and inculcate in them good reading habits.

On her part, Mrs. Rosemary Obozu, Principal, Ogharefe Secondary School, Oghara noted that government alone cannot address the falling standard of education.

Obozu urged good-spirited Nigerians, Corporate organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations to emulate the good gesture of Onorigho and the Foundation.
