Armed robbers on Saturday within the hours of 1 to 3 am shot one person and injured many others when they attacked Ifa Ikot Akpabio area of Uyo Local Government.

The outlaws, who were said to be over 20, also attacked Okpoyo Street and other adjourning communities.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the robbers inflicted injuries on many residents in the areas.

He added that the bandits also carted away valuable items like ATM cards, laptops, mobile telephones, cash, among others.

“My neighbour was shot; I thank God that he did not die because he just lost his wife.

“It is ridiculous that armed robbers can come to communities, not one and operated for about two hours without police responding to any of the distress calls.

“Some residents called police numbers many times when the armed robbers were operating, but none responded. We were only left on the mercy of the armed robbers,” the eyewitness said.

Another resident, Ekomobong Inyang, said the areas have witnessed many armed robbery cases.

He called on the Akwa Ibom State government to come up with policies that will aide in curbing the incessant armed robbery attacks in the areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Odiko MacDon, declined comments as he ignored calls from our correspondent. He also ignored text message that was sent into his telephone.
