Armed robbers kill one, raid A’Ibom Newspaper Corporation
Ini Billie, Uyo
Armed robbers have invaded the Akwa Ibom State Newspaper Corporation and killed one of its security guards.
It was gathered that on Friday night, preceding Saturday morning, the armed robbers invaded the premises of the state-owned newspaper, publishers of Pioneer Newspaper, along with information drive in Uyo and carted away some items.
It was learnt that in the process of the robbery, where properties like a generator set, televisions and wire cables were carted away, an ad-hoc security guard on duty, Mr Edet Obot, was shot dead.
Sources within the newspaper corporation who spoke on condition of anonymity on Monday in Uyo confirmed the incident and expressed sadness at the death of the security guard.
Stating that the corpse of the deceased had been removed from the premises, they alleged that the robbers had help from within.
“The incident probably happened with the help of an insider. It is very distressing that the security guard was killed. He was not even a staff,” the sources said.
When the General Manager of Pioneer, Mr Umoette Umoette was contacted on the incident, he did not pick up his phone calls as at the time of filing this report.
But the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, when contacted, confirmed the incident.
She said, “We are aware and on top of the matter.”
