One dies as jeep runs over pedestrian in Lagos

A Nissan Pathfinder jeep veered off its course and ran over a male adult pedestrian, killing him at a spot inward Mile 2 enroute Lagos International Trade Fair.
The jeep was said to have later halted when it hit a Volkswagen, which had stopped to pick up passengers.
The Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Las State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency raced to the scene of the accident after receiving distress calls via its emergency help line.
He said: “On arrival, it was discovered that a collision had occurred between a Gold Colour Nissan Pathfinder with number plate KTU 92 BB and a blue colour Volkswagen Vanagon bus with number plate GGE 838 XT.
“The Nissan Pathfinder jeep ran into a male adult pedestrian and hit the Volkswagen, which had stopped to pick up passengers. Unfortunately, the adult male pedestrian lost his life on impact while the drivers of both vehicles appear to be unhurt.”
He stated that relatives were able to claim the corpse of the deceased while the combined efforts of the agency, LSNC and the Nigeria Police, Itire Division are ongoing to secure the scenes and recover the accidented vehicles from the road.
Meanwhile, the agency also reported fire outbreak at Zone Two, Owode Onirin Market.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the agency was alerted to the above inferno by distress calls to the emergency helplines at 2300hrs last night and immediately activated its response plan.
He said on arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the section of the market selling spare parts was ablaze.
“A combined team of the Agency Fire fighters and the Lagos State Fire Service battled through the night to curtail the fire.
“Initial post disaster assessment indicates that extensive property damage has occurred with yet to be confirmed number of shops directly affected. The operation was concluded at around 0500hrs this morning,” he said.
