Obi appoints new Presidential Campaign DG, replaces Okupe

The Labour Party (LP) has appointed, Akin Osuntokun, former political adviser to ex-President Olusegen Obasanjo as its Presidential Campaign Council’s Director General.

The party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, said this in Abuja on Tuesday after a strategic meeting which had members of the National Working Committee and many political candidates of the party in attendance.

According to Abure, the decision was reached after wide consultations with party stakeholders across board.

Osuntokun replaces another former aide of Obasanjo, Doyin Okupe, who stepped down from the role after his conviction for money laundering.

Abure described Osuntokun, a former Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, as a “worthy and trustworthy” replacement for Okupe.

Osuntokun became the South-West leader of the party after he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the LP in August 2022. LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is also a former member of the PDP.

Okupe announced his resignation in a letter last Tuesday following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that convicted him of violating the Money Laundering Act.
