MTN Champs: Ezeakor, Peter, others display superlative performance

Chidera Ezeakor, who won the event at MTN Champs in Benin City and finished 2nd to Favour Ashe at the Lagos leg, raced to the overall fastest time of 10.35 seconds, a new Personal Best in the Senior men’s preliminaries in Uyo in the ongoing event.

The MTN Champs, which is ongoing at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw Ezeakor ahead of Glory Olokpa, 10.44 seconds and Lucky Daje, 10.47 seconds, in the 100m events.

Action heated up at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, particularly in the 100m events, where numerous athletes lit up the track with impressive Personal Bests (PBs) in the MTN Champs grand finale.

In the women’s race, Kate Odumoso bettered her personal best from MTN CHAMPS Benin by five-hundredths of a second to emerge as the fastest overall qualifier in the prelims in 11.55 seconds over Cynthia Chioma, who also smashed her personal best from 11.65 seconds to 11.56 seconds, and Sophia Efetobore, 11.65 seconds.

The Junior men’s category witnessed Williams Stephen stop the timer in a personal best of 10.77 seconds to outpace all competitors in the qualification round.

Team MTN’s Alvin Onyeama won his heat in an easy 10.89 seconds while Olerirume Righteous rounded up the top three finishers.

It was a spree of personal bests in the Junior women’s 100m class as Team MVP Ejiro Peter blasted to a new lifetime best of 11.89 seconds, improving from her previous 12.17 seconds to lead all the heats.

Not far behind was her teammate Ufuoma Merit, who registered 11.90 seconds to win her heat ahead of Perezide Sigah, who also ran a personal best of 11.94 seconds.

Emmanuel Salubi was the winner of the men’s 400m hurdles. Nsikak Okon Francis took second while Moses Eze took third.

Daniel won the junior category, placing above Endurance Favour and Goodluck Kabowei.

More than 2,000 athletes from 136 secondary schools and 93 junior and senior teams are vying for honours at the MTN CHAMPS grand final.

The MTN Champs season 3 will come to a close on May 9 with awards of trophies to deserving winners and teams.
