Two feared killed, 40 trapped as three-storey shopping plaza collapses in Abuja

Many trapped in collapsed building in Abuja

About two people are feared dead with over 40 believed to be trapped in the rubbles of a collapsed three-storey building at 7th Avenue, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

The Network gathered that the structure was a three-Storey shopping mall near Charley Boy Area at Galadinma, Gwarimpa.

Acting Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Mrs Florence Wenegieme, who confirmed the incident to journalists said that her team had rescued six persons.

“The six persons we rescued have been taken to Gwarimpa General Hospital. We are working to rescue more victims,” she said.

The Director, Department of Development Control in the Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA, Me Mukhtar Galadima, confirmed the sad development.

It was learnt that the topography of the Area is weak as the place seems to be a natural drainage close to a valley.

The source said that there is a high possibility that the weak terrain area might have caved into the weight of the heavy three-story structure and not necessarily the quality of building materials deployed.
