The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with the distribution of relief materials to members of the association.

The event, held on 10 March 2026 at the POWA Secretariat in Uyo, was organised under the leadership of the Chairperson, Hajia Zainab Baba Mohammed Azare, as part of activities marking the global celebration of women and their contributions to nation-building.

The gathering attracted spouses of police officers, female police personnel and other women stakeholders, who reflected on progress made in advancing women’s rights, welfare and security.

In her keynote address, Hajia Zainab emphasised the importance of collective action in building safer homes and communities. She noted that police officers’ wives play a crucial role as pillars of support for their husbands, who serve as frontline defenders of peace in Akwa Ibom State and across Nigeria.

A highlight of the event was the distribution of relief materials to members of the association. According to the Chairperson, the gesture was aimed at cushioning the impact of the current economic challenges on police families and reaffirming POWA’s commitment to the welfare of its members.

Items distributed included foodstuffs, sanitary pads, clothing and other household essentials.

“This distribution symbolises our love and solidarity. As we celebrate the strength and resilience of women around the world, we must ensure that no member of the POWA family is left behind. The welfare of our women and children remains a top priority,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the POWA Chairperson for her leadership and commitment to improving the welfare of police families.

He assured the association of the Command’s continued support and acknowledged the vital role women play in strengthening the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
