The wife of the Ikorodu Local Government Chairman, Mrs. Kadijat Ladega, has reiterated her commitment to supporting widows and the elderly with welfare interventions.

Mrs Ladega gave the assurance on Thursday during the distribution of food items and cash support to widows and elderly women at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat in Lagos.

The palliatives distributed included bags of rice, beans and garri, alongside a cash support of ₦5,000 for each beneficiary.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Ladega said her husband’s administration remained committed to the welfare of widows, the aged and women in general.

“My husband has been doing a lot to support widows and the elderly, not only them but women as a whole. I have assured them to remain calm; what may not be enough now will be improved upon subsequently.

“We may not be able to do everything at once, but we will continue to do our best,” she said.

In her remarks, the Coordinator of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Mrs Mary Enigbokun, urged the chairman’s wife to prioritise the health needs of widows and elderly women. She also called for transportation subsidies during women’s conferences and appealed for the creation of employment opportunities for youths.

Similarly, Mrs Habibat Argungu, who represented Northern women, appealed to Mrs Ladega to ensure inclusiveness in all programmes and advised beneficiaries not to sell the food items given to them.

Responding, Mrs. Ladega assured the women that their requests would be considered, promising to personally review and improve some of the benefits meant for widows in Ikorodu.

She also encouraged the women to ensure they were registered voters with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing the importance of civic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“At least 70 per cent of your requests will be addressed to enable you live comfortably and peacefully. The issue with the transformer mentioned will be looked into, and I will ensure one is provided.

“On health matters, we will ensure periodic medical check-ups. Those requiring surgery should submit their medical documents so we can intervene,” she said.

Mrs Ladega further promised to hold regular meetings with women, particularly widows, to ensure they feel supported despite the loss of their spouses.

Also speaking at the event, the Ikorodu Local Government Chairman, Mr Adedayo Ladega, pledged to fulfil the promises outlined in his campaign manifesto and urged the women to support his administration.

“I urge the women to remain calm and trust us, as their welfare will remain a priority while we work to take Ikorodu Local Government to the next level,” he said.
