The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday, inaugurated a newly constructed ultra-modern Divisional Police Headquarters in the Eleshin area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The project was facilitated by the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson, with support from the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF).

Speaking at the inauguration, Egbetokun said the new facility marked a significant milestone in the Nigerian Police Force’s drive to strengthen security through improved infrastructure, professionalism and community-based policing.

According to him, the headquarters is not just an investment in infrastructure but a strategic boost to public safety, crime prevention and community confidence.

“A conducive and well-equipped environment such as this enhances operational efficiency, improves service delivery and brings policing closer to the people,” the IGP said.

He commended the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for executing the project in line with modern policing standards, urging officers deployed to the division to safeguard and maintain the facility as a symbol of professionalism and service.

Represented at the event by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Mr Dayo Akinbusehin, the IGP also appealed to residents to continue supporting the police with timely and useful information, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.

In his remarks, Rep. Benson described the construction of the police headquarters as a step in the right direction, noting that it would help reduce crime, deter criminal activities and enhance safety in the area.

He urged the host community to take full ownership of the facility and appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to security reforms, including efforts to upgrade police training centres and improve officers’ welfare.

“This edifice, facilitated by my good self through the Police Trust Fund, is remarkable. With improved security comes prosperity, and this project is a step in the right direction,” he said.

The lawmaker assured residents of his continued support, promising to facilitate the rehabilitation of the access road to the station and provide a utility vehicle to enhance police operations.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, said the project was part of the fund’s special intervention aimed at closing critical infrastructure gaps and improving service delivery at the grassroots.

Sheidu reaffirmed the NPTF’s commitment to supporting police training, infrastructure, equipment and welfare nationwide in line with the President’s vision.

He commended Rep. Benson for his advocacy and leadership in ensuring the successful completion of the project and appreciated the Lagos State Government, the host community and other stakeholders for their support.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun (Adeboruwa of Igbogbo), thanked the IGP and the lawmaker for the project and appealed for increased security presence to curb insecurity in the area.

Similarly, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency II, Mr Aro Moshood, called for the establishment of more police stations, citing the vulnerability of some communities such as Igbe Laara.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Mr Hammed Aroyewun, expressed gratitude to the IGP, the NPTF and Rep. Benson for bringing the project to fruition.
