FUO student, 19, dies from illicit drug overdose

Mr Job Alawari-Kei, a 300-level student of the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Federal University of Otuoke (FUO), Bayelsa State, has reportedly died from an Illicit drug overdose.
The deceased student, popularly known as Alas, aged 19, reportedly collapsed and died after taking an Illicit drug known in local parlance as Colos.
According to some students on the campus, the drug (Colos) is mainly taken among youths involved in Internet fraud, which is commonly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ in Nigeria.
A student, who pleaded anonymity, claimed that the deceased Alawari-Kei was celebrating a recent breakthrough on an Internet deal with his friends when he allegedly consumed the illicit drug that killed him.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bayelsa State Command, Mr Asinim Butswat, confirmed Alas’ death.
Butswat added that the corpse of the deceased student had been deposited at the hospital for autopsy and that investigation had been launched into the matter.
A statement by the police spokesman on Tuesday said: “On May 3, 2023, at about 2200 hours, one Job Alawari Kei ‘m’ 19 years, a student of the Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department of Federal University Otuoke, slumped after intake of illicit substances.
“He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. The corpse has been deposited at the hospital for autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.”
