FRSC warns against reckless driving, as six feared dead

A fatal crash occurred along Mbiabong Itam road off Itu – Uyo road in Akwa Ibom. This happened at about 0800hrs on Wednesday, 28. No fewer than six persons were feared dead.

This information was in a statement. Mr Edward Odiete issued it. He is the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for the Akwa Ibom Command in Uyo. This occurred on Thursday.

Odiete said the crash involved a Tricycle (Keke) with Registration number DUU407WZ and a DYNA Truck without a number plate.

He said four males, one female and two children were involved in the crash.

He, however, said that three out of the four males, the female, and two children were confirmed dead. The remaining male, the driver of the DYNA truck, reportedly fled the crash scene before FRSC operatives arrived.

The sector commander said the operatives received a report of the incident. They mobilised promptly and moved over to attend to the situation.

When they arrived at the crash scene, they transported the bodies of the deceased to a morgue. There, they deposited them.

Eyewitnesses reported the cause of the crash. It was speed-related and due to brake failure.

“After immediate evacuation of the victims, the road was cleared of the wreckage to enable free-flow of traffic,” Odiete said.

Odiete warned road users, especially motorists, against reckless driving, speeding, wrong-way driving and distracted driving.

He noted that the incident could have been avoided. The driver and rider needed to observe certain degrees of safety measures and precautions. They also should have adhered strictly to traffic rules and regulations.

The sector commander reiterated the need for safety consciousness among drivers and riders.

He urged passengers to ensure drivers are not ignored when recklessness or deviation from road safety is observed.

Odiete, while commiserating with the families of the deceased, urges all road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules. This adherence is crucial to avoid wanton loss of lives and property due to road crashes.
