No fewer than four persons were reportedly injured after an affray in the Papa Ashafa area of Agege following the announcement of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa removal.

It was learnt that as the crowd began gathering, arguments ensued concerning who was behind Obasa’s travail; supporters of the erstwhile speaker were said to pick on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as one to blame for Obasa’s impeachment as the speaker of the Lagos assembly.

One of the eyewitnesses who gave her name simply as Kemi told our correspondent that before one could wink eyes, the fight broke out around Sura Street, Papa-Ashafa and resulted in people running in all directions for safety.

According to her, the affray was fierce and lasted till around 10 pm. Some injured were quickly attended to by owners of patent medicine stores.

She noted that commercial motorcyclists (okada) were not spared as they avoided the area in case the boys might take to gunfire.

“The incident happened around 7.30 pm or so, till almost 10 pm. They were arguing about who disgraced Obasa, adding that they were not going to tolerate it.

“Obasa was useful to all of us here. He empowered so many youths; and upgraded and tarred many streets within the Agege area. Is this the type of person people should hate? No, there is nothing they can do to make us hate Obasa. He is our man for life,” she said, quoting one of the fighters.

Another eyewitness said he was surprised at the momentum of the event happened in the area. He noted that he couldn’t wait but left for home to save his life as anything could happen.

He said: “My brother, what happened on the evening of 13 January 2025 was foolishness. Did the fight bring Obasa back to power as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly? If someone was killed in the fight, it would just be like that, he’s dead and gone.”

Earlier, Obasa’s supporters were seen gathering outside his house in Agege on Monday moody and uncomfortable.

Obasa, who is abroad, was impeached on 13 January 2025 for gross misconduct and abuse of office. He was accused of spending about N17 billion on a gate to the assembly complex.

The former speaker has been replaced by Mojisola Miranda from Apapa 1 Constituency.
