The Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, Akwa Ibom State, has warned students against cultism, sexual misconduct, examination malpractice and other antisocial behaviours, stressing that such acts will not be tolerated within the institution.

The Rector, Mrs Eduma Essien, gave the warning on Tuesday during the 12th orientation programme for newly admitted students at the polytechnic in Ukana.

Essien cautioned that cultism, examination malpractice and all forms of misconduct attract severe sanctions, urging the students to conduct themselves in line with the institution’s rules and regulations.

She specifically advised students to report any form of sexual harassment or undue pressure from lecturers to the management or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit, emphasising that the institution strongly frowns on the exchange of gifts for marks.

According to her, discipline remains central to academic success, urging the new students to completely shun such practices and familiarise themselves with the polytechnic’s policies.

“We have zero tolerance for cultism and examination malpractice because we want to produce graduates who can confidently defend their certificates anywhere,” the Rector said.

Essien further explained that beyond academic certificates, students would be equipped with practical and vocational skills through the institution’s mandatory skills acquisition programme.

She noted that the global labour market now prioritises competence and value, adding that the practical skills offered by the polytechnic are certified and internationally recognised.

Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to training students in knowledge, skills and character, the Rector encouraged the students to cooperate with their lecturers by diligently completing their assignments to ensure effective and rewarding teaching and learning.

She also announced that the sale of handouts had been banned in the polytechnic, advising students to purchase only approved textbooks.

Essien pledged that the management would continue to provide a learning environment that promotes discipline, safety and academic excellence.
