A commercial bus driver was confirmed dead on Thursday as a 40-foot container fell on vehicles at Cele Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.

Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency on arrival at the scene, discovered that multiple accidents involving a MACK truck with an unknown registration number conveying twin 20ft containers, a Volkswagen bus with number plate AKD 489XZ, a Highlander SUV with number plate AGL 366FP and a Toyota RAV4 with number plate AAA 353FH were encountered.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated that further information gathered at the scene revealed that the truck driver lost control due to a mechanical fault (brake failure) while at top speed, before ramming into the vehicles ahead of it.

He said: “Unfortunately, an adult male (bus driver) lost his life to the incident while the injured victims (4) four in number (3) Three males (1) one female have been transported to a hospital.

“The agency’s LRT, FRSC, agency paramedics and NPF are the responders present at the scene.

“Recovery operation pending as the atmosphere is charged with street urchins attacking people at the scene.”

He added that the remains of the deceased have been bagged and handed over to the relatives.

According to him, the agency has requested for police coverage to manage the safety of our first responders.
