Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has assured corps members deployed to the state of their safety and welfare, while pledging to upgrade facilities at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area.
Eno gave the assurance on Friday while declaring open the 2026 Batch C Stream I orientation course at the camp.
The governor, who was represented by the Director, Ministry of Youth Development, Emmanuel Akpabio, said his administration remained committed to protecting the lives and property of corps members throughout their service year.
“The Government of Akwa Ibom State remains firmly committed to your welfare and safety throughout your service year.
“We are taking deliberate steps to ensure your security and comfort. Be assured that your lives and property will be adequately protected against harassment or intimidation,” Eno said.
He also pledged that work would commence shortly to improve facilities at the orientation camp and provide a more conducive environment for training and accommodation.
Eno congratulated the corps members on completing their academic pursuits, describing them as co-builders of the nation who could contribute to national unity and development through their intellect, energy and creativity.
He urged them to embrace the diversity of the orientation camp, which he described as a “miniature Nigeria”, and use the opportunity to build lasting relationships across ethnic and regional boundaries.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Rosemary Akuagbaogu, said 1,978 prospective corps members had been registered for the orientation course.
She said the figure comprised 910 males and 1,068 females, adding that the corps members had demonstrated commendable discipline since arriving at the camp.
Akuagbaogu, however, expressed concern over the condition of some facilities at the camp, saying the situation had been worsened by the rainy season.
She appealed to the governor to intervene urgently to improve accommodation and other facilities.
“I humbly solicit Your Excellency’s speedy intervention to improve accommodation facilities and to ensure the welfare, comfort and safety of corps members,” she said.
