Emir of Gumel dies in Cairo after 46 years on throne

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 81.

The monarch died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after reigning over the Gumel Emirate for nearly 46 years.

His death was announced by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, in a condolence message shared on Thursday.

Sani ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, succeeding his predecessor and becoming one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Jigawa State.

Pantami described the late emir as a distinguished scholar and a respected traditional ruler who devoted his reign to the welfare of his people.

According to the former minister, Sani was widely regarded as a voice of wisdom and a father figure who worked to promote peace, education and the preservation of the cultural heritage of his people.

He expressed condolences to the monarch’s immediate family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the government and people of Jigawa State.

“On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation,” Pantami said.

He prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and asked God to grant his family, the emirate and the people of Jigawa the strength to cope with the loss.

The late emir’s death brings to an end a reign that spanned more than four decades, during which he witnessed major political, social and economic changes in Nigeria and Jigawa State.

His long tenure also saw the Gumel Emirate navigate successive administrations at both the state and federal levels, while the traditional institution continued to play a role in maintaining community cohesion and cultural identity.

Although details surrounding the monarch’s death were not immediately disclosed, Pantami confirmed that he died in Cairo.

Further arrangements concerning his remains, funeral rites and succession to the Gumel throne were not immediately announced.

The death is expected to trigger mourning across the emirate and Jigawa State, with tributes likely to follow from political leaders, traditional institutions and residents who knew the monarch during his long reign.

Sani’s passing leaves the Gumel Emirate without its traditional ruler after almost half a century on the throne, setting the stage for the process of selecting his successor in accordance with the customs and applicable laws governing the emirate.

For many in Gumel, the death marks the close of a defining chapter in the history of the emirate and the departure of a monarch whose reign covered several generations.
