The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 5 May 2026 arraigned Dr Andefiki Markus before Justice H.H. Kereng of the Gombe State High Court sitting in Gombe, Gombe State, over an alleged N20 million cattle investment fraud.

Markus was arraigned by the Gombe Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on two counts bordering on obtaining by false pretence.

According to the EFCC, Markus allegedly obtained N20 million from Mr Skeptra Useni Baka on 27 June 2023 through his Access Bank account, under the pretence that the money was for investment in cattle fattening in Taraba State for profit on behalf of the complainant.

The alleged offence is said to contravene Section 1(1)(c) and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following his plea, prosecution counsel, Abubakar Aliyu, urged the court to fix a trial date and remand the defendant in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service. However, defence counsel, C.C. Ichecu, informed the court that a formal bail application had already been filed.

After hearing both parties, Justice Kereng remanded the defendant in EFCC custody and adjourned the matter until 7 May 2026 for the hearing of the bail application.
