Nine senators on Thursday announced their defection from their respective political parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that could further reshape the dynamics within the National Assembly.
Of the nine lawmakers, five defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), three left the Labour Party (LP), while one senator parted ways with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The senators who defected from the PDP are Dauda Yaroe, Lawal Usman, Ogochi Onawe, Aminu Tambuwal and Austin Akobundu.
Those who left the Labour Party include Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh, and Tony Nwoye.
According to the lawmakers, eight of the defectors, drawn from the PDP and LP, cited persistent leadership crises and internal disagreements within their former parties as the major reasons for their decision to switch allegiance.
However, Enyinnaya Abaribe, the lone senator who left APGA, explained that his defection was prompted by his removal from the party in September 2025. He said the circumstances surrounding his exit made it impossible for him to remain with the party.
The defections were formally announced during plenary, drawing reactions from fellow lawmakers and observers who believe the action may influence political alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
