Akwa Ibom increases corps members’ allowances by 300%

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has increased the allowances of the youth corps members serving in the state by 300 per cent; from N5,000 to N20,000, effective August 1, 2025.

The governor, who disclosed this at the State Delivery Meeting held at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, added that the gesture became necessary due to the prevailing socio-economic challenges.

According to him, the increase was to support the Federal Government’s N77,000 monthly allowances to aid corps members meet their basic needs.

“Over 10,000 corps members are posted to Akwa Ibom annually. We must continue to encourage and support them,” the governor said.

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that Pastor Eno had earlier approved the reconstruction of the NYSC Orientation Camp at Ikot Itie Idung in Nsit Atai local government area, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of corps members in the state.

He recalled that the NYSC scheme, established in 1973, was a brainchild of former military ruler, Gen.  Yakubu Gowon, to foster social, ethno–religious and political integration for greater unity, peace and oneness of Nigeria.

“It was created to foster national integration, unity and development by deploying young graduates to states outside their regions for community service, education and nation-building efforts.

“Akwa Ibom has remained one of the most welcoming and safest destinations for NYSC members, with corps members actively contributing to sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and rural development.”

Appreciating the gesture, a senior official of the NYSC described the decision as borne out of the compassionate heart of a leader who moves with the time and understands the yearnings and aspirations of his subjects.
