A’Ibom speaker, Aniekan Bassey, wins senatorial election

The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Aniekan Bassey of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has been declared the winner of the election into the Akwa Ibom North East senatorial seat.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Enoidem Usoro, announced the results at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom on Monday.

Usoro said that the election was contested and the candidates received the following votes, Mr Aniekan Bassey of PDP, scored 98, 634 votes and won his closet rival, Mr Ukpong, Emaeyak Nkanga of All Progressive Party (APC), who scored 43, 204 votes.

“I, Professor Enoidem Usoro, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2023 election for the Akwa Ibom North East held on Feb. 25, 2023.

“The election was contested and the candidates received the following votes; Bassey, Aniekan Etim – PDP scored 98, 634 votes, Ukpong, Emayak Nkanga- APC scored 43, 204, Akpabio, Usenobong Otu- YPP scored 37,679 and Ekpenyong, Leo Enobong – LP polled 20,548

“I then declared that Bassey, Aniekan Etim, having satisfied all the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Usoro declared. 

Meanwhile, the returning officer for Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district, Prof Anthony Udoh, had earlier declared Sen. Godswill Akpabio of APC as the winner having polled a total of 115, 401 votes.

Udoh in his declaration said that Akpabio defeated his closest rival, Mr Emmanuel Enoidem of the PDP who polled 69, 838 votes. Emmanuel Ekon of YPP scored 6,841 votes while Okpongete Nseobong of LP scored 3, 401.
