A'Ibom assembly passes resolution to enforce ban on use of motorcycles

Akpan Umoh, Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Umo Eno to direct the Commissioner for Transport and security agencies to enforce the ban on motorcyclists operating on restricted routes in Uyo Metropolis.

The resolution of the House at plenary on Friday is the sequel to the notice on a motion on the need to Re- Enforce Ban and Prosecution of Motorcyclists Plying in Unauthorised Areas within Uyo Metropolis, brought before the house by the member representing Mkpat Enin state constituency, Mr Uwem Imo-Ita.

The motion was seconded by the member representing the Ini state constituency, Mr Lawrence Udoide.

Imo-Ita expressed displeasure on the nonchalant attitude of defaulters, who trade with impunity by deliberately plying the unauthorised routes, using their motorcycles even in broad daylight not minding the consequences of the law.

The lawmaker said that it was most saddened that personnel of the law enforcement agencies, who are supposed to enforce the law are the major defaulters, hence not leading by example.

He pleaded with the leadership and members of the House to support the motion to reactivate the law for the arrest and prosecution of the offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

He urged that the directive be extended to the Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Commission (EARCOM) to step up a public enlightenment campaign to sensitise residents on the gravity of the offence.

Members, who spoke in support of the motion, frowned at the fragrant abuse of the law and urged the governor to direct appropriate authorities to swing into action to enforce the law.

The Speaker, Mr Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the resolution of the House to the Governor, to issue a directive to appropriate authorities for the enforcement of the ban.
