Eni, the parent company to Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) says the leak from the Ogboinbiri-Tebidada pipeline at its Nigerian operations is being investigated.

Confirming the oil spill incident, a statement by a spokesperson on behalf of Eni’s management said an investigation was underway on Friday.

Although the community traced the oil spill to a ruptured pipeline, the oil company said a joint investigation visit to the incident site would ascertain the cause of the oil leakage.

“Joint investigation visits with representatives of the authorities and of the communities are ongoing, to ascertain the facts and agree on the way forward,” Eni stated.

The people of the Olugboboro community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa have written to the Bayelsa government to intervene.

According to the Olugboboro community letter, the spill occurred about two months ago along the Ogboinbiri/Tebitada pipeline when the pipeline ruptured which has been attributed to equipment failure.

The community called for relief materials and compensation to the community to ameliorate their suffering.”
