Afebua commends Azare, demands intelligence, professional policing

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, AIG Rashid Afebua, has charged personnel of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to prioritise intelligence-led policing, professionalism and discipline in the fight against crime.

Afebua gave the charge on Monday, September 14, 2026, during an official visit to the command headquarters in Uyo, where he interacted with officers and men and assessed the command’s operational posture.

The AIG stressed that effective policing goes beyond physical presence, saying credible intelligence, strategic deployment, effective supervision and rapid response were critical to preventing and combating crime.

He commended the command’s personnel for their dedication and urged them to remain disciplined, courageous and professional while discharging their responsibilities.

Afebua also praised the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, for his leadership and the command’s efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.

He encouraged Azare to sustain the momentum in tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug-related offences, violent crime and other emerging security threats through proactive and intelligence-driven operations.

The AIG, however, warned personnel against corruption, indiscipline, abuse of authority and other forms of unprofessional conduct capable of eroding public confidence in the Police.

He directed commanders at all levels to lead by example and strengthen supervision, stressing that officers must uphold discipline, integrity and respect for human rights in their dealings with members of the public.

Afebua also called for stronger collaboration between the Police and sister security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders, noting that sustainable security required partnership with the communities being served.

As the country moves towards another electoral season, the AIG reminded officers of their obligation to remain politically neutral, fair and professional, while providing a secure environment for lawful political activities.

Earlier, Azare welcomed the AIG and his entourage, describing the visit as timely and significant to the command’s efforts to improve its operational effectiveness.

The commissioner outlined the command’s ongoing measures to tackle major security threats through intelligence gathering, proactive policing, visibility patrols, community engagement and collaboration with other security agencies.

Azare expressed appreciation to the AIG for the visit and the strategic guidance provided to the command, saying the interaction had further strengthened the personnel’s professional capacity and operational focus.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that the visit provided an opportunity for personnel to receive direct guidance from the Zone 6 leadership and reinforced the importance of discipline, integrity, professionalism and service to the nation.
