Tanzania is in mourning following the passing of First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on Monday morning at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar after battling a heart condition. He was 78.
Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi officially announced the loss, noting that Ameir passed away at 8:00 AM local time. Funeral arrangements are currently underway in Kizimkazi, a coastal village in Zanzibar.
An agricultural academic by profession, Ameir maintained a reserved public profile throughout his life, rarely appearing alongside his wife at public engagements. He made history as the nation’s inaugural First Gentleman when President Hassan took office in March 2021.
The couple married in 1978, well before President Hassan launched her political career. Together they raised four children, three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who currently serves in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Regional leaders express sympathy
Tributes and condolences have poured in across the continent following the announcement.
Kenyan President William Ruto offered heartfelt condolences via social media, describing Ameir as a distinguished figure and a pillar for his family. “President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto stated, offering prayers of comfort and solidarity on behalf of Kenya.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also extended deep sympathies to President Hassan, her family, and the citizens of Tanzania, wishing them strength and fortitude during this difficult period.
