A resident, speaking anonymously, described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking. “Rescue efforts are ongoing as emergency responders and residents continue searching for passengers who remain missing,” the source said.
The incident has plunged the community into mourning, with families gathering along the riverbank, hoping for information. Residents have appealed for intensified rescue operations, fearing that time is running out for those who may still be alive.
As of press time, the cause of the accident remains unclear, and the identities of many victims have yet to be confirmed. Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations progress.
Ahmed Rufai, spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, said the command would issue a statement soon. Meanwhile, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are en route to Gorau to coordinate rescue and recovery efforts.
For Gorau, the accident is more than a statistic, it is a devastating reminder of the risks faced by communities that rely on river transport. With safety standards often neglected and overcrowding common, residents are left vulnerable to recurring tragedies.
