Tragedy in Enugu: Midnight lightning strike kills teenager in bed

In the quiet hours of Monday morning, a bizarre and chilling incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Chukwujekwu Eyah in Ogboli, Ugbaike—a community within Enugu State’s Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

At around 1:00 am, lightning struck the room where Eyah was fast asleep alongside four other boys. Remarkably, the high-voltage bolt took Eyah’s life instantly while leaving the four boys lying on the exact same bed completely unharmed. Neither the surrounding property nor nearby livestock sustained any damage, adding an eerie dimension to the tragedy.

Alerted to the youth’s death by 8:00 am, family members promptly arranged his burial, which took place on Wednesday. Official police confirmation regarding the incident remains pending.

In the wake of his death, relatives have looked beyond mere natural phenomena, attributing the selective strike to deep-seated traditional beliefs. Family members revealed that Eyah’s late father was a reputed rainmaker who had acquired traditional instruments, deemed capable of altering weather patterns, from his wife’s ancestral home in nearby Iheaka, Igbo-Eze South.

According to relatives, who reportedly consulted traditional diviners following the incident, Eyah had recently handled these sacred relics without performing the necessary custom rites. They allege that failing to appease the instruments triggered a supernatural retribution.

While these mystical claims remain unverified, the surrounding community continues to grapple with the shocking nature of Eyah’s sudden demise.
