Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has received the first batch of 20 state-owned buses out of the 50 ordered by his administration, reaffirming his commitment to building a modern, efficient and affordable public transportation system in the state.
Receiving the buses at the Government House, Uyo, the governor described the delivery as another major milestone in his administration’s efforts to transform the state’s transport sector.
He expressed gratitude to God for the successful arrival of the vehicles and commended all those involved in the procurement process.
The governor specifically praised the Ministry of Transport, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), its Managing Director, Mr Imo-Abasi Jacob, the Managing Director of Peacock Paint, Mr Ime Uwa, and other stakeholders for their commitment to the project.
Eno disclosed that the remaining 30 buses would be delivered in phases while work continues on the construction of modern bus terminals in the state.
“We have just received the first 20 buses. We ordered 50, and they will arrive in batches. The next step is to complete the terminals. We have already paid for the tracking devices, and we will install vehicle trackers, introduce an electronic ticketing system and provide every necessary facility. This will deliver a better transport system for Akwa Ibom State,” he said.
The governor reiterated his administration’s resolve to make transportation safer, more convenient and affordable for residents.
“What we promised our people was to make transportation easier and more accessible. Akwa Ibom has one of the best road networks in Nigeria, second only to Abuja. These buses will operate across all 31 local government areas, which is why we are constructing transport terminals to ensure seamless movement of people and goods throughout the state,” he added.
The governor explained that starting with 50 buses was a strategic decision, noting that additional buses would be procured as demand grows.
The governor said he was encouraged that the investments made by his administration were already yielding positive results and would continue to improve the lives of residents in the years ahead.
“I see a brighter future for Akwa Ibom. All these projects are coming together. Within three years, by the grace of God, you will witness the rewards of the seeds we have sown. I believe our administration has laid a solid foundation, and the state is gradually entering its harvest season,” he said.
The governor congratulated the people of Akwa Ibom for their continued support and confidence in his administration and urged them to remain hopeful and united as more developmental projects are delivered.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, thanked Governor Eno for his unwavering commitment to repositioning the state’s transport sector.
He described the arrival of the buses as evidence of the administration’s determination to modernise public transportation infrastructure and services.
According to him, the initiative has been widely welcomed by residents and is expected to improve mobility, stimulate economic activities and provide a safer, more efficient and reliable public transport system across Akwa Ibom State.
