Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate for the 2027 Delta State election, has expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious, insisting that the poll will be won “fairly and squarely”.
Speaking in an interview, the veteran politician said the 2027 governorship race would be markedly different from previous elections in which he had participated, arguing that increased public awareness and voter vigilance would make electoral manipulation more difficult.
Ogboru, while expressing concerns about the outcomes of past governorship elections, emphasised that democracy can only thrive when citizens are free to choose their leaders. He also stressed the importance of a strong opposition in sustaining democratic governance.
The ADC candidate questioned why Delta State continues to face significant developmental challenges despite receiving substantial revenue and federal allocations over the years.
According to him, government expenditure should focus not only on infrastructure but also on education, healthcare, skills acquisition, youth empowerment and broader human capital development.
“Roads and physical projects alone do not amount to development unless they improve the living conditions of the people,” he said.
Ogboru further advocated greater autonomy for local governments, arguing that meaningful and sustainable development must begin at the grassroots level.
He maintained that Delta State requires stronger accountability, prudent management of public resources and people-centred policies to achieve lasting progress and improve the welfare of residents.
The governorship hopeful also insisted that he has remained politically independent throughout his career, stating that no governor could claim to have financed his political ambitions.
“No governor can say I collected money from him since I have been contesting,” he said.
Ogboru described the ADC as a credible alternative to the dominant political parties, which he accused of failing to deliver meaningful development. He added that leadership should be driven by integrity, accountability and service to the people rather than the pursuit of political power.
He reiterated that Delta State’s considerable revenue must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of its citizens.
