Court orders IGP, Police Commission to pay constabularies four years' salary arrears

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police Service Commission to pay salaries to Police Constabularies.

The court ruled that each constabulary is entitled to a monthly salary of ₦54,566 from January 2021 to May 2024, amounting to four years of arrears.

Justice Rakiya Haastrup, who delivered the judgment on Wednesday, also mandated the issuance of letters of employment and certificates of engagement to the constabularies.

The court noted that these officers had undergone training, received uniforms and boots, and were lawfully deployed across states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The suit was filed on behalf of the constabularies by the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Senastine Hon, seeking justice for the prolonged non-payment of their wages.

This landmark ruling not only ensures payment of the owed wages but also reinforces the rights of law enforcement officers to fair treatment and recognition for their service.
