Rector seeks maritime infrastructure expansion to boost international trade

The Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron, Commodore Duja Effedua, has called for expanding maritime infrastructure to boost international trade and position the country as a competitive player in the global shipping industry.

Effedua said on Monday in his remarks at the Maritime Academy in Oron during the 2024 Maritime Lecture Series, which will last for three days.

The theme of the event is, “Revamping the Maritime Industry in Nigeria for Global Competitiveness: Issues, Challenges, and Prospects.”

Effedua, represented by the Director of Specialised Seafarers, Dr Kelvin Okonna, said that the expansion plan includes; investing in modern technology and improving port facilities to accommodate larger vessels and handle increased cargo volumes.

He said the move will increase efficiency and reduce costs in the maritime sector, making the country more competitive globally.

The rector said that the maritime sector plays a crucial role in the country’s economy, noting that over 80 per cent of international trade is carried out by sea.

“The Maritime Industry defines our international trade and economy, and this is why discussing this topic today is very important, especially at this time when Nigeria’s economy is being battered from all directions.

“The maritime industry drives Nigeria’s economy, and 80 per cent of international trade depends on maritime, because we are one of the major oil-exporting countries, and Nigeria is heavily involved in the exportation of other commodities.

“There are challenges facing the industry, which include inadequate infrastructure, inadequate skilled manpower, and a weak regulatory framework, among others.

“Amidst these challenges, there are prospects in the sense that Nigeria has made itself one of the exporting countries, and there are prospects in the sense that Nigeria is strategically located to serve as a hub for regional and international trade into Africa,” Effedua said.

Mr Emmanuel Maiguwa, President of Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria (AMAN), urged the country to embrace Smart Port, which leverages advanced technology to overcome challenges such as congestion and other delays.

Maiguwa stated this while speaking on the topic “SMART PORT: Transforming Nigerian Ports with Technology – Embracing Innovation for Efficiency and Growth.”

He said that smart ports will transform traditional ports into highly efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure.
