Women’s group seek gender, social inclusion

League of Queens International Empowerment has advocated for Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI), saying it would foster gender equality and growth.

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the leader of the group, Obonganwan Regina Asanga said at the weekend in Uyo that addressing the diverse gender experiences and needs of individuals would create opportunities for equal participation and growth in communities.

“Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) plays a crucial role in achieving gender equality. By acknowledging and addressing the diverse experiences and needs of individuals from different genders and backgrounds, we create opportunities for equal participation and growth.

“This fosters a more inclusive society, where everyone has access to resources, decision-making platforms, and the chance to thrive without facing barriers due to their gender or social status,” she stated.

Also speaking at the event supported by the Global Green Grant Fund, Joy Ubong Bassey explained that Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) is a concept that seeks to improve access to livelihood, assets and services for all, including women, poor, and excluded.

Bassey noted that it supports inclusive policies and mindsets, as well as increases the voice and influence of women, the poor and the excluded.

She emphasised that the distinction between gender and sex creates a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding gender and social inclusion, and encourages participation in meaningful conversations, stories of inclusion, and actions that contribute to a more equal and just society.

She noted that International Women’s Day is a reminder of the work that needs to be done to achieve true gender equality.
