Five arraigned for stealing cassava in A’Ibom community

Police in Akwa Ibom have arraigned five persons including three women before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ini Local Government Area for allegedly stealing cassava worth about N10 million from a cassava farm, owned by FEYREP, pet project of the wife of the State Governor, Dr Martha Emmanuel.
The cassava is said to be for the upkeep of widows and less privileged members of the society.
In the charge number MIN/7c/2021 between the accused persons and the Commissioner of Police, the court, presided over by Senior Magistrate Edehe-Udim Joseph Akpabio, admitted all the accused to bail in the sum of N5m each and one surety each in like sum.
Akpabio, who described the offense as bailable, ordered that the sureties be either public servants in the employ of Akwa Ibom State Government or certificated traditional rulers.
The court also held that the sureties must deposit their two recent passport photographs, with a photocopy of their National Identity cards or any other means of permanent identification in the court.
The senior magistrate also ordered that the accused persons sign a register with the Assistant Chief Registrar of the court every other Monday till the case is disposed of.
