Five hundred indigent undergraduates studying in public tertiary education in Nigeria are to benefit from the scholarly scheme of Akwa Ibom State government.
It was gathered that the beneficiaries of the scholarship who meet the eligibility criteria would receive N200,000 per session.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Ini Ememobong, said the decision was taken after the State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday in Uyo.
He noted that the Commissioner of Education has been instructed to ensure transparency in selection processes.
According to Ememobong, the scholarship scheme would complement the already existing free and compulsory education policy of the government at the primary and secondary levels.
“The scheme is to aid 500 intelligent but indigent undergraduates, of Akwa Ibom origin, studying in public tertiary institutions in the country.
“The scholarship award is in the sum of N200,000 per session. The Ministry of Education and State scholarships board are to publish the eligibility criteria for candidates,” he stated.
Ememobong also said that the inauguration of the State Steering Committee of Nigeria for Women Project is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo.
He revealed that Nigeria for Women Project is a five-year operation of the Federal Government with the support of the World Bank which aims at ensuring gender equality and improving the economic fortunes of women.
