The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has sensitised Akwa Ibom public on procedures to adhere to COVID-19 protocols to mark the 2021 World Defence Day.

The State Commandant of NSCDC in Akwa Ibom, Mr Samuel Fadeyi, told newsmen on Monday that apart from sensitisation, the agency also distributed facemasks to the people.

Fadeyi said that the theme for this year’s Civil Defence Day is; “Civil Defence and a First Aider in Every Home.”

He said the Command would use the sensitisation to inform members of the public on the functions and duties of NSCDC,  as well as an x-ray of the civil defence corps as a first aider in every home and why the corps  stands as a strategic institution mitigating emergency and disaster situations.

Fadeyi said that the world civil defence day is celebrated on March 1 every year to raise consciousness on civil protection, emergency management and how civil population could best cope and protect itself in times of emergency.

“The Corps sensitise the public on COVID 19 protocol and give out free facemasks.

“The Akwa Ibom State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps joins the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO) to celebrate World Civil Defence Day.

“March 1 every year is designated as world civil defence day’, a day set aside to raise the consciousness of Nigerians on The Civil Defence Corps, civil protection, emergency management and how the civil population can best cope and protect itself in times of emergency and disaster,” Fadeyi said.

According to him, NSCDC  held a Thanksgiving service at Holy Ghost Ambassador Cathedral in Uyo as part of the activities.

The commandant said that the command used the opportunity to thank God for his gracious love and protection over his personnel and the corps in the past one year.
