Vandals cart away manhole covers at Godswill International Stadium
Concerns are simmering as vandals have removed the manhole steel covers at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo unchallenged.
A concerned citizen of Akwa Ibom State, Tony Saviour, who observes the anomaly in his Facebook handle, noted that “One day we might wake up to discover that the seats in the stadium have all been stolen.”
According to him, “Question is: what then is the essence of the CCTV Cameras mounted at the stadium; Why don’t the authorities recall the footage to see how the criminals were able to access the premises and therefore come up with a counter-theft mechanism to check further incursions?
“Methinks footage of the CCTV cameras should be reviewed regularly to expose strategies used by criminals of any kind.
“The vandals of the manhole covers, who may not be different from those who also vandalized the manhole covers along the Banking Layout and other strategic places, should be apprehended immediately and charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others.”
Saviour told Ndito Akwa-Cross, a Facebook platform that the state government has to establish security posts around the stadium to safeguard the property.
“The permanent solution would be to establish a security post at the stadium with personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and men of the Nigeria Police Force deployed to mount security to avert further security breaches both within the stadium and the adjoining communities,” he said.
