Police track down stolen vehicle, arrest suspected car snatcher

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major operational success with the arrest of a suspected armed robber and car snatcher, as well as the recovery of a stolen vehicle in Uyo.

The incident happened on January 20, 2026, around 11:30 pm., when operatives of the command, during a routine night patrol along the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium area in Uyo, responded swiftly to a distress call from a Bolt driver, whose name was withheld.

The driver reported that his Toyota Corolla had been forcefully taken from him at gunpoint.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, said that upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered that the suspects had already fled with the vehicle.

However, through prompt intelligence gathering and follow-up operations, police operatives traced the stolen vehicle to Nkwot Ikono Village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.

Subsequently, one suspect, identified as Sunday Okon, a male from Nna Enin Village in Uruan Local Government Area, was arrested in possession of the stolen Toyota Corolla bearing the number plate DKA 337 CB.

John disclosed that the suspect confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation. She added that the suspect is currently in police custody, while discreet and intensive investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal gang and recover their operational weapons.

Commending the swift response and professionalism of the operatives, Azare reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.

The police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and useful information to assist security agencies in their fight against crime.
