Police order arrest of officers escorting unauthorised VIPs

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has directed the immediate arrest of any officer found escorting private individuals, politicians, or VIPs without approval from the Force Headquarters.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, announced the directive on Tuesday after a strategic meeting with senior officers in Uyo.

He added that the meeting was convened to issue fresh instructions aimed at strengthening internal discipline and improving public safety in the state.

Azare expressed concern over the growing disregard for the Inspector-General of Police’s order prohibiting officers from providing security escorts to unauthorised VIPs.

“Any officer found guilty will be disarmed, subjected to an orderly room trial, and sanctioned accordingly. Area Commanders and DPOs will be held responsible for the conduct of their personnel,” he warned.

The CP also condemned the spread of fake news and misinformation, particularly on social media, saying such actions could incite fear and threaten the peace enjoyed in the state.

He directed officers to intensify community engagement, identify emerging threats, and ensure that individuals deliberately spreading falsehoods are tracked and prosecuted.

Azare further reminded officers of the state government’s ban on masquerade activities, noting that such gatherings had led to violence, public disturbances, and breaches of peace in the past.

He ordered Area Commanders, DPOs and Tactical Commanders to enforce the ban strictly, warning that any negligence or compromise would attract disciplinary action.

Addressing security concerns such as cultism, armed robbery, and street gang activities, the CP ordered Tactical Units, Area Commands, and Divisions to carry out rigorous stop-and-search operations, intelligence-driven raids on black spots, and sustained surveillance on suspected criminal hideouts.

He stressed that these operations must be conducted professionally, without subjecting citizens to harassment.

Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to keeping Akwa Ibom among the most peaceful states in the country, Azare urged officers to stay disciplined, vigilant, and dedicated to their duties.

He noted that effective policing depends on professionalism, teamwork, and public trust.

The CP called on residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation, assuring the public that the Command will continue to work with other security agencies to maintain peace and security.
