The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azare, has presented cheques of ₦53.7 million to 34 families of police officers who died in the line of duty.
The presentation, held as part of the 2026 National Police Day and ongoing Police Week celebrations, was conducted on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police in a solemn ceremony.
In his address, Azare described the occasion as both sombre and significant, noting that it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by officers who gave their lives in service to society. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of the families left behind.
He said the fallen officers served the nation with courage, loyalty and selflessness, standing firm in the face of danger to ensure the safety of others. According to him, their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and their legacies will remain part of the Force’s history.
Addressing the bereaved families, the commissioner acknowledged their pain and assured them of continued support.
“The cheques presented today are not merely financial instruments; they symbolise our collective gratitude, recognition of sacrifice, and commitment to the families of our fallen heroes. While no amount can replace the lives lost, this gesture reflects the resolve of the Force leadership to ensure their sacrifices were not in vain,” he said.
Azare also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for prioritising personnel welfare, including the prompt payment of benefits and improved support systems within the Force.
He urged serving officers to see the moment as a reminder of the demands of policing, calling for renewed dedication, professionalism and service to humanity.
The commissioner concluded with prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed officers and strength for their families.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Michael Urua expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force for its support and for standing by them in their time of grief.
