Ogun police arrest Benin Prison escapee, one other for electricity cable theft
The Ogun State of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested a Benin Correctional Centre escapee, Festus Okoeguare and one Nancinant Paul Joshua for stealing electricity cable.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects were apprehended on July 16, 2022, following intelligence received by policemen at Ogbere divisional headquarters that the power installation at Hallmark University junction along Shagamu-Benin Expressway had been vandalized by some hoodlums.
The PPRO added that upon the information, the DPO Ogbere division mobilised his men in conjunction with the men of Amotekun corps and moved to the scene.
According to him, on sighting the security men, the hoodlums took to their heels while a getaway vehicle they parked quickly zoomed off with some cables.
He said: “Other suspects were hotly chased and two amongst them were apprehended.
“On interrogation, it was discovered that Festus Okoeguare was an escapee from White House Correctional Centre located at Sapele road Benin city.
“It was further revealed that the escapee was convicted for murder in 2010 and was sentenced to death by hanging. It was during the #ENDSARS protest that the prison was broken into and he escaped.”
The state Commissioner of Police in the state, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for proper profiling and onward transfer to the Correctional Centre.
