NYSC coordinator decries lack of commitment by corps members

The Akwa Ibom Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Sam Pepple, has expressed displeasure with the attitude of some corps members posted to serve in the state.

People, in a statement in Uyo on Thursday, marking the Passing Out Parade of the 2024 Batch B Stream 11 corps members, decried the level of evasion of service by corps members.

He said that some corps members no longer show commitment and patriotism to serve their fatherland; rather, they expect to be paid for services not rendered.

“No fewer than 50 corps members in the 2024 Batch B Stream 11, who were sent to Akwa Ibom State, are to repeat the service for abscondment during the service year.

“They will repeat the service year, having absconded from their place of primary assignment for up to three months without permission.

“This is indeed a sure way of curbing indiscipline among the service corps,” he said.

Pepple said that 41 corps members comprising 18 males and 23 females would have to face extended service from one week to four months for absenteeism among other offences.

He promised that all erring corps members would be made to face the full weight of the law, no matter the tactics they employ.

He commended some of the corps members for exhibiting a very high sense of maturity and responsibility as they conducted themselves honourably and within the ambit of the law during the service year.

The state coordinator urged corps members to use the knowledge acquired from Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) to develop themselves and become better citizens.
