NOA charges youths to embrace positive mindset for peace

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerian youths to embrace a positive mindset and constructive values as vital tools for promoting peace, unity and national development.

The Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call during an interactive session at the National Social Impact Leaders Summit held at the National Universities Commission Auditorium in Abuja.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Media and Communications of the agency, Mr Bala Musa, said Issa-Onilu was represented at the event by the Director of Youth Engagement and Inclusion, Mrs Blessing Oyem.

The NOA boss stressed the urgent need to re-orient Nigerian youths towards values that support nation-building, sustainable development and lasting peace.

While acknowledging the energy, creativity and capacity of young Nigerians, Issa-Onilu noted that these strengths were often underutilised and must be properly harnessed to drive national transformation.

He said the core values that once guided young people and formed the foundation of society had gradually eroded, adding that their revival was critical to achieving sustainable development.

Issa-Onilu emphasised leadership development, civic education and inclusive governance as key pillars for youth empowerment.

“Empowering young people with the right skills, mentorship and tools is essential to keeping them engaged and fully prepared to contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.

The director-general also highlighted the importance of responsibly using the digital space to promote national cohesion, peace and mutual understanding, noting that it can help reduce misinformation and foster harmony among ethnic and religious groups when properly utilised.

However, he warned that digital platforms could also be misused to spread false information, posing a threat to national stability.

He urged youths to be vigilant and discerning online by relying only on verified, credible and accurate sources of information. Issa-Onilu further stressed the role of parents in shaping the mindset of youths by instilling positive values, promoting patriotism and encouraging peaceful coexistence in society.
