Man beats octogenarian grandmother to death in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested one Naziru Magaji for beating his 80-year-old grandmother to death and throwing her corpse in a well.

Magaji, who confessed to murdering his granny, blamed the incident on a hard drug known as ‘Exol’. He added that he was intoxicated upon taking the substance.

Speaking on the suspect’s arrest on Friday, March 25, the police spokesman in the state, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said that a resident of Wangara Village, Tofu Local Government Area reported at about 1 pm on Thursday that Magaji, aged 25, of Kununu Yalwa Danziyal, Rimin Gado LGA, had beaten up his 80-year-old elder sister, Habiba Abubakar, and threw her body in an old deep well at about 12 noon.

The PPRO stated that the report made the state Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, to instruct a team of detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Tofa Division, CSP Isiyaku Mustapha Daura, to proceed to the scene.

Kiyawa said further that the team went to the scene immediately, removed the body from the well to Tofa General Hospital where the grandmother was examined and confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

When interrogated, the suspect, who said he was mentally stable, admitted beating his 80-year-old grandmother and throwing her body inside a well, but stated that he committed the act after taking intoxicating drugs called exol.

He further confessed that he had been in the habit of taking hallucinating/intoxicating drugs for a long period. Despite warnings by his mother, Magaji said he refused to heed the advice.

The police image-maker said that the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the command’s Criminal Investigation Department, after which the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
