Insecurity: Trump criticises Tinubu, calls Nigeria “a disgrace”
United States of America President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Nigeria’s handling of insecurity, describing the country as “a disgrace” during an interview on Fox News Radio’s The Brian Kilmeade Show on Friday.
Trump alleged that thousands of people were being killed in what he termed “genocide,” accusing the Nigerian government of failing to act decisively.
“I think Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide. And I’m really angry about it,” he said.
He added that the United States provides “a lot of subsidies” to Nigeria, warning that such support may soon be halted.
“The government’s done nothing. They are very ineffective. They’re killing Christians at will. And you know, until I got involved in it two weeks ago — nobody even talked about it,” Trump claimed.
Trump’s comments come amid growing international concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation. The country has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks, mass kidnappings, and deadly raids by armed groups.
In the past week alone, a series of violent incidents left numerous casualties: Boko Haram ambushed and killed a Brigadier-General and several soldiers in Borno State.
Twenty-five female students were abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, where the Vice-Principal, Hassan Makuku, was killed, and a security guard, Ali Shehu, was shot.
Gunmen attacked a church in Eruku, Kwara State, killing one person and abducting worshippers.
On Friday, over 300 students and 12 staff members were kidnapped from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwarra LGA of Niger State.
The Nigerian government has not yet formally responded to Trump’s latest remarks.
