Gunmen kill three policemen, injure two in Anambra

Gunmen have killed three policemen who were on duty in Onitsha, Anambra State on Sunday.

The killing was said to have happened around 9 am on the Ukaegbu/Ezeiweka road in Onitsha.

It was learnt that two other cops were injured during the shooting at a security post mounted by the police operatives.

The gunmen were also said to have set the operation vehicle of the cops ablaze.

A witness said the gunmen may have been angered by the alleged extortion by the operatives at the security post.

“Any time they station there, the residents feel relieved because the place is a dangerous area. But the way they extort motorists is what people don’t like.

“Some people believe the gunmen are pro-Biafra agitators.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident.

According to him, he had yet to have details of the incident.

He added, “The information is still sketchy. I will get back to you.”
