FRSC rescues Anthony Joshua as two die in Ogun road crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash involving a vehicle conveying world-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, and a stationary truck along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja, said the crash happened on Monday, December 29, 2025, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, according to a statement from the Ogun Sector Command of the FRSC.

He stated that preliminary reports indicated that the incident happened at about 12:00 noon and was promptly reported to the Corps. FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of notification, enabling swift rescue operations, evacuation of victims, effective traffic control and the prevention of secondary crashes.

The crash involved a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN (private) and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. A total of five adult males were involved in the incident.

Two people lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and was reported to have sustained minor injuries.

The injured victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was notified for further investigation and necessary documentation.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC suggest that the Lexus Jeep was likely travelling above the prescribed speed limit and lost control while attempting to overtake, before crashing into the stationary truck, which was properly parked by the roadside. Excess speed and wrongful overtaking were identified as the primary causes of the crash.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of the management and staff of the agency, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victim, including Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.

The FRSC reiterated its warning to motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and disregard for traffic regulations, especially on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Road users were urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline and prioritise safety, particularly during the festive travel period.

The corps reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads, prompt emergency response and sustained public enlightenment aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities nationwide.

Meanwhile, Ogun and Lagos state authorities have reported that Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua and another passenger are in stable condition following comprehensive medical assessments at a Lagos hospital.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinlade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso.

The government officials said, “They were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos states wish to confirm that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.”
