Enugu North Senator Okechukwu Ezea has passed away. His passing was confirmed on Wednesday by his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, in a post on her verified Facebook page.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described Ezea as “a good man — wise and gentle” whose prayers and support strengthened her during some of her most difficult moments in public life.

She wrote: “Rest in peace, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea. You were a good man! Wise and gentle. Your prayers kept me going through my darkest moments, and I will miss you in chambers. Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honours your Senator and mourns with you.”

Born on 11 August 1963, Okechukwu Ezea was a Nigerian politician, lawyer, and businessman. Until his death, he represented Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, having been elected to the Senate in 2023 on the Labour Party platform.

Early life and education

Ezea was born in Enugu State to Theresa (née Attamah) and James Ezea. He began his education at Community Primary School, Umachi, Enugu-Ezike, before proceeding to Nsukka High School for his secondary education.

He later attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1986. He further obtained his LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Political journey

Ezea’s political career took root during his time at the University of Nigeria, where he held various student leadership positions. He became a full-time politician in 2007, contesting as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Enugu State.

Although the election result was eventually overturned by the courts, it marked his emergence as a major political figure in the state.

In 2013, he was among those who co-founded the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in Enugu State and subsequently became the party’s governorship candidate in 2015.

In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the governing board of the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, Taraba State. He held the position until 2022, when he resigned and returned to the Labour Party.

Senate career

Ezea was elected to the Senate on 25 February 2023, where he represented Enugu North until his death. His tenure was marked by advocacy for development in his senatorial district and contributions to national legislative deliberations

His death has thrown Enugu North and the National Assembly community into mourning, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, constituents, and political associates.

Further details regarding the cause of his death and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the Labour Party.
